Juvenile Dermatomyositis is very rare and is often referred to as an orphan disease, meaning that it tends to be pushed aside for more common and well-known diseases. There isn't a lot of knowledge about it or funding for research, which can make diagnosis and treatment very difficult.
However, the Cure JM Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established by those who had to endure the heartache brought from many different forms of myositis in an attempt to make things better for their loved ones, as well as all the children who might be faced with it in the future. They help fund research and raise awareness of this disease, as well as provide support and information for families suffering myositis. They have been a major support system for my family, which is why we feel it is our duty to volunteer and give back. All money raised will go directly to the foundation. Hopefully one day, we can help stop children from having to suffer this awful disease! The Cure JM Foundation can proudly say that with the money collected, they have:
Another reason fundraising is so important, according to Hudson's rheumatologist, is that JDM is one of only two autoimmune diseases that has the ability to eventually shut itself off. If researchers can find the link to what helps this disease eventually "disappear" in many patients, then they might be able to do the same for those who suffer from adult dermatomyositis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other more common and debilitating autoimmune diseases. |
